Where Art & Interiors Meet

Canvas vs. Paper Prints: Which Is Best for Your Space?

Canvas vs. Paper Prints: Which Is Best for Your Space?

It’s one of the questions we hear most often: Should I choose a canvas or paper print?

The answer? Both are beautiful, high-quality options made to last. The best choice really comes down to the look you love, how you want the artwork to feel in your room, and where you plan to display it.

Canvas prints offer natural texture, dimension, and more of the feel of an original painting, while paper prints create a crisp, polished, traditionally framed look. And while there are certain rooms and spaces where we tend to recommend one over the other, there really isn’t a wrong choice.

At Urban Garden Prints, both our paper and canvas artwork are fine art giclée prints, created to beautifully reproduce the color, detail, and character of the artist’s original work. Every piece is printed on high-quality, acid-free paper or canvas using museum-quality inks designed for exceptional color and longevity. They resist fading, even in the sunniest of spaces, and are made to be enjoyed for years to come.

So, which one is right for your home? We’re breaking down the differences between canvas and paper prints, the benefits of each, and which one we would choose for every room.

What Is the Difference Between Canvas and Paper Prints?

The primary difference between canvas and paper art prints is the material the artwork is printed on and the finished look that material creates.

Because both options are created using the same commitment to fine-art quality and longevity, your decision doesn’t need to come down to which one will last longer. Instead, think about texture, presentation, durability needs, and the overall look you want to create.

Canvas Prints: Textural, Relaxed & Artful

Canvas has a beautiful woven texture that adds natural dimension to artwork and can give a print more of the look and feel of an original painting.

Our canvases are not embellished, meaning no additional paint, brushstrokes, or texture is applied by hand after printing. The texture comes from the high-quality canvas itself and the beautiful detail captured from the artist’s original work.

Because canvas prints don’t require glass or acrylic over the artwork, there’s nothing between you and the image. This allows you to appreciate the color, detail, and natural canvas texture without reflection from a glazing surface.

Canvas is also incredibly versatile, durable, and forgiving. It’s one of our favorite choices for busy family homes, bathrooms, children’s spaces, rental properties, vacation homes, and anywhere artwork may see a little more everyday life. It can be displayed as a wrapped canvas for a simple, relaxed look or paired with one of our floating frames for a more finished, elevated presentation.

Canvas prints are a great choice when you want:

• The natural texture of canvas
• More of the look and feel of an original painting
• A relaxed but elevated presentation
• Large-scale statement art
• Artwork without glass or acrylic
• A durable and forgiving option for busy or high-traffic spaces
• The option of adding a floating frame

Paper Prints: Crisp, Classic & Polished

Fine art paper prints create a more traditional framed-art look. The smooth surface provides a crisp, beautiful reproduction of the original artwork, while adding a frame gives the piece structure and a polished, finished feel.

Our paper prints are produced on high-quality, acid-free paper using museum-quality inks for exceptional color and longevity. Just like our canvases, they are designed to resist fading and maintain their beauty for years, even in rooms filled with natural light.

Our framed paper prints are protected with Conservation Clear Acrylic, which provides 99% UV protection while keeping the finished piece lighter and safer to ship than traditional glass.

Paper art prints are a great choice when you want:

• A crisp, detailed finish
• A classic framed-art look
• A structured or tailored presentation
• Artwork that feels polished and refined
• A frame that becomes part of the overall design

Which Lasts Longer: Canvas or Paper Prints?

When it comes to the artwork itself, this is one area where you don’t have to choose.

Both our canvas and paper fine art prints are made using acid-free materials and museum-quality inks for lasting color and exceptional longevity. Neither option should be considered the better choice based on the lifespan or quality of the print alone.

Where canvas does have an advantage is in spaces where physical durability matters. Without acrylic covering the artwork, canvas is more forgiving in busy, high-traffic environments and eliminates one more surface to worry about.

Think of paper versus canvas primarily as choosing how you want your artwork to look and feel in your home, while also considering how the space is used.

Choose canvas for natural texture, durability, and a relaxed, artful feel. Choose paper for crisp detail and a classic framed presentation.

Either way, you’re choosing fine art made with high-quality materials and designed to last.

Canvas or Paper Prints? The Best Choice for Every Room

Personal style should always be the deciding factor, but after helping customers choose art for every room in the home, there are certain spaces where we naturally gravitate toward one material.

Living Room Art: Canvas

For living rooms, we often reach for canvas prints, particularly when working with a large piece of art or an oversized pair.

The texture gives large-scale artwork presence without making it feel overly formal. Canvas works beautifully above a sofa, over a console, or as the focal point on a large blank wall.

Add a floating frame for a more elevated look, or keep it unframed for something simple and relaxed.

Our pick: Canvas for an effortless, artful statement.

Dining Room Art: Paper

Dining rooms are one of our favorite places for framed paper prints.

A beautiful frame brings structure to the artwork and can make the entire room feel more finished. Framed paper art works especially well in dining rooms with traditional, transitional, or more formal design elements.

It’s also an opportunity to let the frame become part of the room’s overall design, coordinating with lighting, furniture, and other finishes.

Our pick: Paper for a crisp, polished finish.

Bathroom Art: Canvas

If you’re wondering whether canvas or framed prints are better for a bathroom, we typically recommend canvas.

With no glass or acrylic covering the artwork, canvas is a durable and forgiving option for bathroom spaces. It also creates a softer, more relaxed look that works beautifully alongside the hard surfaces typically found in bathrooms.

We especially love a pair of canvas prints over a double vanity or one large statement canvas above a bathtub.

Our pick: Canvas.

Bedroom Art: Canvas or Paper

Bedrooms are one of those spaces where we truly love both canvas and paper prints.

Canvas creates a softer, more relaxed feeling that works beautifully above a bed, particularly with landscapes, abstracts, florals, and other painterly artwork.

Framed paper can give the same space a more tailored and polished feel, especially when the frame coordinates with other finishes throughout the room.

Our pick: Canvas for relaxed and textural. Paper for classic and polished.

Kids’ Room & Nursery Art: Canvas

Canvas is an easy favorite for children’s bedrooms, nurseries, and playrooms.

Without glass or acrylic on the front, canvas is lightweight, forgiving, and practical while still giving you a beautifully finished piece of art.

Canvas also works especially well for oversized artwork in kids’ rooms, where you can make a big visual impact without adding heaviness to the space.

Our pick: Canvas for beautiful art without the worry.

Entryway Art: Paper

Your entryway sets the tone for the rest of your home, and framed paper artwork can create an especially polished first impression.

A beautiful frame helps define the art and can tie into other finishes in the space, from lighting and hardware to mirrors and furniture.

Whether you’re hanging a single statement piece or a coordinating pair, framed paper art gives an entryway a finished, designer feel.

Our pick: Paper for a polished first impression.

Art Above a Fireplace: Canvas

A fireplace naturally creates a focal point, so we love choosing artwork with enough scale to hold its own.

Canvas works especially well above a fireplace because you can go larger without the artwork feeling visually heavy. Without acrylic over the front, you also avoid reflections that can sometimes compete with the artwork in such a prominent location.

A floating frame gives you the best of both worlds: the texture of canvas with the finished look of framed art.

Our pick: Canvas for an impactful focal point.

Kitchen Art: Paper

Kitchens often have smaller, unexpected places where art can make a big difference.

A framed paper print tucked above a countertop, on an open wall, or near a breakfast nook can make a kitchen feel collected and intentional rather than purely functional.

We especially love smaller framed art in kitchens for that layered, lived-in look.

Our pick: Paper for a crisp, collected touch.

Rental Properties, Beach Houses & Vacation Homes: Canvas

If you’re choosing art for a rental property, vacation rental, beach house, lake house, Airbnb, or other high-traffic property, canvas is always our first choice.

These are spaces where durability really matters. Guests come and go, luggage gets moved around, children and families fill the rooms, and artwork needs to be able to handle everyday life. Canvas is durable and forgiving, with no glass or acrylic on the front to worry about.

It’s also an ideal choice for second homes where you want beautiful, elevated artwork without choosing something that feels overly precious or requires extra care.

Canvas is especially practical for beach and lake houses, where relaxed interiors and large-scale art naturally go hand in hand. Choose an unframed canvas for the most relaxed presentation, or add a floating frame for a more finished, designer look.

We also love canvas for other high-traffic areas, including bunk rooms, game rooms, hallways, mudrooms, family rooms, and gathering spaces.

Our pick: Canvas for rental properties, vacation homes, and anywhere durability is key.

Is Canvas or Paper Better for Art Prints?

Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your personal style, where the artwork will be displayed, and how the space is used.

If you love texture, dimension, durability, and the feeling of an original painting, canvas may be the better choice for you. It’s also our go-to for bathrooms, kids’ spaces, vacation homes, rental properties, and other areas where you want your artwork to be a little more forgiving.

If you love a crisp, classic, polished framed look, paper may be the better fit.

And if you love both? Mix them throughout your home.

Your artwork doesn’t need to be the same material in every room. In fact, mixing canvas and framed paper prints can add another layer of interest and make your art collection feel thoughtfully collected rather than overly coordinated.

The most important thing is choosing artwork you love and then selecting the material and frame that make it feel at home in your space.
